An NC3 non-contact laser tool setter is used to check the condition of the inserts in a face mill. At first the tool is spun at high speed to perform a general length check. This is followed by a cycle where the tool is spun more slowly so that each insert can be checked to see that it is within a preset tolerance of the correct size.
Detecting broken inserts on larger tools can reduce scrap due to poor surface finish and tool 'chatter'.
